Underground Cabling (Pit & Pipe) Course

This course is designed for experienced cablers who hold an Open Registration or for civil workers looking to work on the NBN & Telstra. This course covers underground infrastructure installation, including duct and pits, and the methods of cable hauling and installation within this infrastructure.

Introduction

  • This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install underground enclosures and conduit, either direct buried or in pits, for new or cable maintenance tasks in access networks for outdoor installations within client premises or in public locations permitted by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
  • It applies to technical staff who install underground infrastructure for new and upgraded telecommunications cabling for domestic, commercial or industrial clients. 
  • Work functions in the occupational areas where this unit may be used are subject to regulatory requirements. Refer to the Implementation Guide Companion Volume or the relevant regulator for specific guidance on requirements.   This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install underground cable for all communications applications in access networks or client premises.
  • It applies to technical staff who install cable for new and upgrades of telecommunications cabling infrastructure for communications applications including broadcasting or reception (digital video broadcasting – terrestrial [DVB-T], digital video broadcasting – satellite [DVB-S], long term evolution [LTE]), closed-circuit television (CCTV), digital and analog, telephony, data, video, digital broadcasting, computer networks, local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), fibre optic networks and multimedia.
  • Work functions in the occupational areas where this unit may be used are subject to regulatory requirements. Refer to the Implementation Guide Companion Volume or the relevant regulator for specific guidance on requirements.
